Is White Sugar Vegan?

by Paul
(USA)

What's the deal with white sugar? I've noticed it's in a lot of so-called vegan recipes, but someone told me it wasn't actually vegan. Is that true? Thanks.

Great question Paul!

It is quite true that white sugar is not only unhealthy, it's also not vegan!

The sugar refining process is quite heinous, pulling all nutrients and minerals out of the cane and leaving only a pure white powder that is totally addicting! (Yes, I'm still talking about sugar!).

The last part of the refining process is the non-vegan part. It involves filtering the sugar to remove any extraneous material. The filters used are most commonly made from charred animal bones. Eew!

The good news is that there are plenty of great natural sugar substitutes available for vegans. These choices are definitely healthier, but keep in mind that sweets are best in moderation!

Cheers,

Fiona
