Vegan Culinary Schools

Vegan Culinary Schools CreationThe interest in vegan culinary schools is growing as rapidly as the ever-expanding awareness of and interest in veganism.

One of the great advantages of studying vegan cuisine is that you not only receive excellent culinary training, you also get a comprehensive background in health and nutrition. For this reason people who want to become nutritionists or dietary consultants as well as people who want to become chefs may also attend this type of school.

Although courses vary from school to school, the types of subjects covered will probably include:

Background and Theory - Courses might include topics such as:

  • Safety and hygiene in the kitchen
  • Handling culinary equipment including knives
  • Culinary Ethics
  • Budgets and dealing with vendors
  • Basics of restaurant management

Health and Nutrition - Courses might include:

  • Basic nutritional
  • Human physiology
  • Lifestyle diseases and diet

Types of Cuisine - Courses might include:

  • Vegan Cooking
  • Ayurvedic
  • Macrobiotic
  • Desserts and Pastries

As you look at the different educational options, there are a few things you'll want to be sure to investigate.

School Staff - As these people are going to be your teachers, mentors, and guides, it's a good idea to take a look a their backgrounds. What are their specialties? Where have they worked? Have they published anything? If so, you may want to take a look at it.

Testimonials - Many schools have Facebook pages where you can find comments by former students and get a fairly good idea of where they have ended up. It will give you a more realistic idea about what to expect.

Licensing and Accreditation - It's important to insure that the institute you select is not fraudulent or of low quality. The best way to do that is to check the accreditation and licensing of the school. Most of the accrediting institutions will be easily verifiable online.

Financial Aid and Payment Options - Some institutions will offer financial aid, but others will not. However, most established schools will provide several different payment options, usually involving a down payment and then several other payments spaced out over a longer period of time.

Location of the School - Most culinary schools, vegan or otherwise are located around major metropolitan areas. If you choose a school that is far from where you live, you may also need to look into temporary housing. Be sure that the school has resources to assist you with that. Again, most established schools will have a number of resources available for incoming and potential students

When looking at vegan culinary schools, you'll find that a little research can pay off very well. Making sure that you know about the programs, the staff and the basic infrastructure of any school you are considering will enable you to make an empowered and informed decision.
