Vegan Frosting

Vegan FrostingUse these scrumptious vegan frosting recipes to top vegan cakes, cupcakes, brownies and cookies!

Vegan frosting is very easy to make. It's a matter of substituting the white sugar - which is not vegan - the butter, and the shortening.

Of course, those are pretty much all the ingredients in frosting, so making it vegan means replacing just about everything!

Not to worry though - it's pretty easy. To replace shortening, I would recommend using coconut oil, which solidifies at room temperature and behaves just like shortening. Coconut oil gives the frosting a hint of coconut in the taste, but its lightness makes it much more appealing than a heavy animal shortening.

To replace butter I recommend Earth Balance spread, but make sure you get the organic version. The non-organic version will have GMO soy and canola in it, even though it too is vegan.

I use Turbinado sugar to replace white sugar, but for frosting Turbinado can be a bit coarse. To remedy this, run the Turbinado through a high-speed blender, or through a food-processor to make it really fine. Turbinado still has minerals in it, so your frosting will have a slight taste of molasses - it's a lovely, rich taste.

Vegan Chocolate Frosting

You'll need:
1/2 cup Earth Balance
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cups powdered organic Turbinado sugar
4 tbsp almond milk
1/2 tsp alcohol-free vanilla extract

Whip Earth Balance until it's creamy. Add the powdered sugar in small batches, alternating between the sugar and almond milk as you continue beating the mixture. Add the vanilla last and whip until the frosting is smooth and creamy. Use it to top vegan cupcakes, vegan brownies, vegan cakes and cookies.

Use a pastry bag to quickly and easily add a decorative flair to your creations!

Vegan "Buttercream" Frosting

You'll need:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 Earth Balance
3 1/2 cups powdered organic Turbinado sugar
1 1/2 tsp alcohol-free vanilla extract
1/4 cup almond milk

Whip the coconut oil and Earth Balance until fluffy. Continue to add the sugar while whipping until the consistency resembles a crumble. Gradually add the almond milk until the frosting is smooth and creamy.

You can create colorful desserts by adding some natural food coloring to your frosting!
