Vegan Smoothies
These vegan smoothies are easy, quick, and delicious! Since disovering the dangers of soy, I now use either rice milk or almond milk as a base.
Smoothies can work as between-meal snacks, or as whole meals. Green smoothies are a particularly good way to get your greens and a big hit of nutrition.
I have included the hemp and brewer's yeast options in most recipes, but you can make any of these smoothies without the extra protein.
If you plan on making smoothies regularly, make sure you have a high quality blender. Most vegans and raw vegans like to use an industrial quality blender. I recommend the Blendtec - It's fabulous!

I make this high protein smoothie recipe as an afternoon snack almost every day! The hemp gives me about half the protein I need for the whole day, and I get my chocolate fix in too!
You'll need:
1 cup unsweetened rice milk or almond milk
2 tsp unsweetened organic cocoa powder (use raw cacao if you can)
1 tbsp vegetarian brewers yeast
2 - 4 tbsp Nutiva Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein Powder
1 banana (You can pre-slice and freeze for more of a "milk-shake" texture!)
3 ice-cubes
Stevia to taste
Throw all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend for 30-45 seconds. If you have the Blendtec Blender, just hit the "smoothie" button. To make a raw version of this, make sure you're using raw almond milk, and raw organic cacao powder.

It's easy to take traditional smoothie recipes and turn them into vegan smoothies. This vegan version of the original strawberry banana smoothie beats the original, hands down - and it's so simple to make!
You'll need:
1 cup frozen or fresh strawberries - you can use a little of both too in order to get a colder smoothie
1 banana
1 1/2 cups organic apple juice
1/2 cup almond milk or vanilla almond cream (optional)
Combine the ingredients in a high-speed blender. Blend until the mixture is thick and smooth. Garnish with a strawberry slice and serve immediately!
You could also dispense with the almond cream and do more of an "icy"-style smoothie.

This is one of the best vegan smoothies for summer - it's a favorite with kids too!
You'll need:
2 cups frozen or fresh mango chunks - you can also use 1 cup frozen and 1 cup fresh to make your smoothie nice and cold!
1/2 cup mango or papaya nectar
1/2 cup almond milk or vanilla almond cream (optional)
Combine ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until the mixture is thick and smooth. Serve immediately.
Alternative: For an "icier" version, don't use the almond milk and use 2 cups of the juice instead.
Please note! Frozen mango chunks are murder on a regular blender! If you love mango smoothies you should really consider the Blendtec Blender. I love mine and can't imagine how I ever lived without it!
A fabulous vegan smoothie, just in time for summer!
You'll need:
1/2 cup raw coconut milk
1/2 cup organic pineapple juice
1 cup pineapple chunks (frozen or fresh)
3-4 ice-cubes (a couple extra if using fresh pineapple
Blend ingredients in a high-speed blender and garnish with a pineapple slice. Yum!

Green Smoothies
The healthiest of all vegan smoothies, green smoothies are without question the best way to consume leafy greens.
Putting a good amount of dark leafy greens in a high speed blender pulverizes them well, allowing the nutrients to be released more effectively than they would be if you just chewed them. Also, when they are in smoothie form, greens are more palatable and you can therefore consume more of them.
Basic Green Smoothie
| Number of Servings | 2 |
| Calories per Serving | 95 |
You'll need:
2 large handfuls of your favorite greens - if you're new to this try kale or spinach
1 large handful of a "rotating" green - see the Guide to Greens for more information
1/4 cup blueberries
1 cup seeded grapes, rinsed
2 cups water
stevia to taste (optional)
Optional: Add 1 tsp maca, 1/4 cup gogi berries, and 1 tsp barley grass powder for a superfoods boost! (Extra Calories: 141)
Blend in a high-speed blender and serve immediately. If you have this for breakfast it will keep you going all morning! Variations - Add mango or watermelon to sweeten things up!

I tested this recipe out on my neighbor, who said it was one of the lightest and most refreshing vegan smoothies he's ever tasted. Keep in mind that he is one of my "testers" so he has tasted more than his fair share of them!
You'll need:
1 cucumber, peeled
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves - maybe a bit less, depending on how strong your mint is.
2 tbsp raw agave nectar
1/4 cup almond milk
Blend ingredients in a high-speed blender, garnish with a sprig of mint or a slice of cucumber (or both!) and serve immediately.
