Vegan Whipped Cream Ingredients

by Mary
(Houston, Texas)

I saw a video of someone making vegan whipped cream. He said to use coconut milk and powdered sugar?

Hi Mary,

The best way to make vegan whipped cream is to use coconut cream because it's so thick and creamy - but I don't recommend standard powdered sugar because it is not vegan.

Powdered sugar is simply white sugar that has been very finely ground, and white sugar is not vegan because part of the refining process involves filtering the sugar through charred animal bones.

So I make my own powdered sugar by running a little bit of organic Turbinado sugar through a coffee grinder for a few seconds.

You can get organic Turbinado sugar in bulk at Amazon. It can be substituted in any recipe that calls for sugar in the same amount.

The most important thing about making the whipped cream is to chill your coconut milk (the canned kind is better) well, and chill your beaters for about half an hour before you start.

For really good results, you might also want to use a metal bowl and pre-chill that as well.

When you chill the coconut milk, the creamy part rises to the top and you can then pour off the water on the bottom. Whip in the metal bowl while adding your powdered sugar.

Cheers,
Fiona
